Žabljak, located in the heart of Mount Durmitor, is known for its rich history that dates back to the Middle Ages. The town was originally founded as a shepherd's settlement and has experienced various influences over the centuries, especially during the Ottoman and Austro-Hungarian rule. Today, Žabljak is recognized as a center for winter tourism in Montenegro, but also as a place that breathes history and tradition.
Surrounded by the imposing peaks of Durmitor, canyons, and pristine mountain lakes, Žabljak offers a unique combination of natural beauty. Black Lake, just a few kilometers from the city center, is one of the most attractive destinations, ideal for walks and picnics in nature. Besides the lake, visitors can enjoy rafting on the Tara River, one of the deepest river canyons in Europe.
Žabljak is home to many cultural events that reflect the richness of local tradition. The Ethnographic Museum in the city center displays the traditional way of life of the people from Durmitor. Additionally, the city annually hosts the Durmitor Evenings Festival, which gathers artists and musicians from the region, promoting both local and national culture. Moreover, a visit to the Church of the Holy Transfiguration, one of the city’s landmarks, is a must.
The local cuisine of Žabljak is a real treat for food lovers, as it is based on traditional mountain dishes. Specialties such as kačamak, cicvara, and Durmitor prosciutto are an essential part of the menu in every restaurant. The restaurant "Koliba" is particularly known for its authentic dishes and homely atmosphere, making it an ideal place to experience the local cuisine.
